AEJT-DRC ORPHANAGE PROGRAM

AEJT-DRC ORPHANAGE PROGRAM

AEJT-DRC ORPHANAGE PROGRAM

The Orphanage Program of the Association of Working Children and Youth of the Democratic Republic of Congo (AEJT-DRC) is an initiative to protect and support orphaned children, separated from their families and particularly vulnerable in the city of Uvira, South Kivu. The program was established to provide children deprived of family care with a safe, stable, loving, and nurturing environment conducive to their development. Currently, the AEJT-DRC orphanage houses 100 children in need of continuous protection and support. These children receive appropriate accommodation, daily meals, access to education, healthcare, clothing, and school supplies. AEJT-DRC also ensures their protection against violence, abuse, exploitation, neglect, and all forms of discrimination. The program adopts a holistic approach centered on the best interests of the child. Beyond meeting material needs, AEJT-DRC pays particular attention to the psychosocial and emotional well-being of children. Recreational, sporting, educational, and cultural activities are organized to foster their development, strengthen their self-confidence, and allow them to cultivate their talents and abilities. Education is a cornerstone of the program. AEJT-DRC supports children in their enrollment and retention in school by providing, according to available resources, school fees, uniforms, supplies, and other necessary materials. For adolescents, the program also includes guidance toward vocational training and skills development to gradually facilitate their independence and socio-economic integration. The program also includes a significant component of family and community reintegration. When possible and in the best interests of the child, AEJT-DRC works to identify family members, assess the living conditions, and prepare for potential reunification. For children who cannot return to their families, alternative care solutions are sought. In addition to the orphanage, AEJT-DRC supports 250 other orphaned and vulnerable children placed in foster families in Uvira. The program thus contributes to strengthening community-based child protection mechanisms and preventing family separations. Through this program, AEJT-DRC aims to guarantee each child safety, dignity, education, health, affection, and hope, while preparing young people to become independent adults capable of contributing positively to their community.
